Boat Shelters
Boat shelters for protected storage on land
A boat shelter provides covered space for your boat during winter storage, between trips or while maintenance is carried out. At Flextents.com, you can choose from compact portable garages to large storage shelters for sailing boats, motorboats and other sizeable vehicles.
The galvanised steel frames and durable PE or PVC covers help reduce exposure to rain, direct sunlight, leaves, dirt and bird droppings. Unlike a close-fitting boat cover, a spacious shelter also provides access to the boat and room to work around it.
What is a boat shelter?
A boat shelter is a freestanding structure for storing a boat on land. It combines a steel frame with a waterproof, UV-resistant cover and provides more headroom and easier access than a conventional tarpaulin.
The range includes shelters in several sizes, heights and designs. Some models are intended primarily for boats, caravans and recreational vehicles, while the largest storage shelters can accommodate substantial boats, machinery and commercial vehicles. Cover materials, entrances, ventilation and other features vary, so check the specifications of the individual model.
How do you choose the right size?
Measure the boat exactly as it will be stored—not just the hull. Include the trailer, engine or outdrive, cabin, windscreen, railings and other fixed equipment when calculating the total length, width and height. If the mast will remain raised, it must also be included.
Check both the internal dimensions and the size of the entrance. The shelter may be large enough inside even though the opening is too narrow or low for the boat. Allow sufficient clearance for manoeuvring, opening doors and moving safely around the boat. If you plan to carry out repairs, cleaning or maintenance inside, include additional working space for people, tools and equipment.
Also consider the available site, the required access and whether you need an entrance at one or both ends.
Should you choose a PE or PVC cover?
PE is a practical, relatively lightweight and economical material for general storage. Its lower weight can make the cover easier to handle during assembly.
PVC is heavier and generally more resistant to wear, making it suitable for frequent use and more demanding storage requirements. Many larger shelters have substantial PVC covers and reinforced steel constructions. Selected models also have flame-retardant covers, but material weight, certification and construction vary.
Some shelters have white roof sections that allow more daylight inside. This can be useful when inspecting or working on the boat during the day.
Can you store caravans and other vehicles?
Yes. Depending on the dimensions and entrance, these shelters can also be used for caravans, campers, motorhomes, trailers, cars, vans and commercial vehicles.
This versatility makes them useful for private owners, marinas, workshops and businesses that need flexible storage capacity. Larger models can also create a sheltered area for cleaning, servicing and preparing boats, vehicles or equipment for the next season.
How should a boat shelter be installed and secured?
Choose a level and accessible site with enough room for assembly, anchoring and opening the entrances. The structure must be anchored correctly according to the instructions for the specific model and surface. Ground pegs may be suitable for soil, while concrete and other hard surfaces require appropriate fixings.
These shelters are intended as temporary coverage and are not tested for specific snow and wind loads. Remove accumulated snow and standing water from the roof, keep the cover correctly tensioned and inspect the structure regularly. Condensation may occur as temperature and humidity change, so adequate ventilation is also important.
Always follow the supplied safety instructions and check whether local regulations require permission for the size, location or intended period of use.
When is a boat tarpaulin sufficient?
A boat tarpaulin may be the simpler choice if you only need a close-fitting cover and do not require walk-in access or working space. Flextents.com offers PE, PVC and translucent tarpaulins in various sizes for boats and equipment.
A complete boat shelter is more suitable when you want easier access, additional headroom and a covered area for inspection and maintenance.
