Bioclimatic pergolas

Bioclimatic pergolas – adjust the roof to suit your day

A bioclimatic pergola lets you change the amount of sunlight, shade and airflow over your outdoor seating area. Open the roof louvres when you want more light, angle them for shade with ventilation, or close them for shelter from a light shower. It is a practical choice for a patio, garden dining area or outdoor lounge that you want to use in different ways throughout the day.

Flextents.com offers bioclimatic pergolas in several sizes, designs and materials. The right choice depends on the space available, what you plan to put underneath the roof and how much shelter you need from the sides.

How does a bioclimatic pergola work?

The adjustable louvres are the main difference between a bioclimatic pergola and a structure with a fixed roof. On models such as San Pablo and Monterey, you turn a handle or crank to change their position. When open, the roof lets in sunlight and air. When closed, it provides shade and overhead shelter.

Several models have integrated gutters to carry rainwater away from the roof. This does not make the area underneath fully weatherproof: wind-driven rain can enter from the sides, and protection during heavy rain depends on the model and conditions. Check the individual product description if rain protection is an important reason for buying.

Which model and size should you choose?

Start with the area you want to cover. Mark the proposed dimensions on the patio or ground, then allow room to pull out chairs and walk around a dining table, lounge set or outdoor kitchen. A 3 x 3 m pergola can define a compact seating area; larger models give furniture and guests more space. For a particularly wide area, selected San Pablo sets contain pergolas that can be connected using the supplied fittings.

Then compare the models’ construction and options. San Pablo Alu+ has a powder-coated aluminium construction and is available in single units and connectable sets. San Pablo Steel+ uses coated ZAM steel. Monterey S2 is another steel option, with its own range of sizes and compatible sidewalls.

Material alone should not decide the purchase. Compare the dimensions, appearance, weight, specified weather limits and accessories of the particular models that fit your space. If you want to join several pergolas or add side protection, check those options before choosing a size.

Pergola or fixed-roof gazebo?

Choose a bioclimatic pergola when adjusting light and ventilation matters to you. You can let in sunshine at one time of day and create shade over the same area later.

A garden gazebo with a fixed roof provides a consistent level of overhead shelter without adjusting the roof during use. Roof materials vary: some block sunlight, while others let daylight through. A fixed-roof model may suit you better if you prefer that consistency; a bioclimatic pergola is the better fit when you want to change the balance of sun, shade and airflow.

Add shelter and privacy where you need it

An open pergola provides shade from above, but low sun and wind can reach the seating area from the sides. Compatible sidewalls and screens can add shelter and privacy to selected models. Some pergolas also have options such as louvre walls or mosquito nets.

Check compatibility before ordering and whether the accessories are included or sold separately. Think about which sides need protection: the direction of the afternoon sun, neighbouring properties and the prevailing wind may matter more than enclosing every side.

Plan the position and installation

Consider how you will use the space before deciding where the pergola should stand. A position close to the house can make outdoor meals easier, while a spot farther into the garden can create a separate place to relax. Check the external dimensions, height, sunlight and access around the structure, as well as the requirements for its base and anchoring.

Install and secure the pergola according to the instructions for your chosen model. Weather limits, maintenance and any winter precautions vary, so follow its technical specifications and guidance. Keeping the louvres, moving parts and drainage channels clear of leaves and debris will help the roof work as intended.

Before ordering, settle three practical questions: Will the footprint fit your furniture and leave room to move? Does the chosen model offer the side protection you need? And can its installation requirements be met where you want to place it? Those answers will do more to identify the right pergola than choosing by appearance alone.
